Upgraded to Windows 8.1 Pro -  new window  is losing focus after while

Hi,

Just upgraded to 8.1 pro. When new window is opened (any application), after about 5-10 secs focus is lost. And again.... I have to click on window to regain focus. VERY ANNOING WHEN TYPING DOCO

ANY SOLUTION MR MICROSOFT?

1. Lodged problem with MS, but bo reply for 5 days

2. Started reading posts on net - some about mouse behaviour got my attention

3. Downloaded and installed latest drivers for Microsort mouse

4. Unpluged 'old' mouse and plugged in new mouse(the same model

5. Problem solved - no more problems with focus

6. Conclusion - could ba a problem with Windows upgrade - mouse locked?

I have the same problem as the original post and the following post.  Window loses focus or refreshes every 5 seconds.  This causes, for example, opened context menus to disappear.  Please provide some answers.

This does not appear to be a Microsoft Problem.  If you're using Start Menu 8, updating to the latest version solves this problem.

Exact same problem, also with an Asus T100.

Mine is brand new and I haven't installed any software. I'm thinking maybe some Asus driver or pre-installed software.

I'll try reinstalling all drivers but if it's not solved I'm returning it.

another Asus T100 user here who only had this start happening today. Doesn't occur when it is plugged into the charger. Will have to research this more after work.

I had some Asus updates waiting for me in the Action Center. Installed those, rebooted, and it's no longer occurring even on the charger.  Very weird. I had rebooted several times before when I was initially troubleshooting so I'm not sure if it was the updates or the fact I was on a full battery charge but still plugged into the charger...maybe it was trying to alert me to unplug? no idea. I'm fully charged and still plugged in now and no longer losing focus. I was able to type this whole post w/o issue.

My solution is simple:

When you loose focus press alt + f4

The nasty app that was causing this is killed >:)

The problem is that I don't know how to identify the app, is there and event inspector or something?

Hi there,

I like your ALT+F4 solution - wish I'd thought of that.

I had this problem after updating to 8.1 on a Dell Inspiron 7000 series laptop.  I noticed Explorer and AVG were using rather a large amount of CPU in the task manager, so killed + re-launched explorer.  Seems to have stopped the stealing of focus and reduced CPU usage a lot.

Problem hasn't re-occurred yet but I think it's a clue to the cause :)

I'm having the same problem. I thought it was Java 7 Ed 71 but uninstalling it did not help.  I'll uninstall MS Mouse and do as you did.  Thank you for sharing your experience.

Hi Roger.  I'm having the exact same problem.  When I performed a Clean Startup, the problem disappeared.  When I got everything back to normal, the problem appeared again.  It must be a Microsoft app that's causing this because it seems as if an invisible application window pops up and causes loss of focus on the desired app.

Did the same.  Uninstalled iObit Startmenu 8 version 1.5xx and installed the same version 1.6xx and so far it's all right.  Thanks for the tip.

Actually, the problem returned even after I upgraded Start Menu 8 to the latest version.  I exit the application, and the problem is still there.  This loss of focus is NOT caused by Iobit Start Menu 8.  Whatever it causes it, it disappears during the Clean Restart.

Whatever it causes it, it disappears during the Clean Restart.
In that case try using AutoRuns.

computer:HP15
mouse: Synaptics PS/2 touchpad

OS: windows 8.1

roll back to previous driver

device manager->mouse->properties->rollback driver

This has solved the focus issue.

I have the same issue when I get VS 2010 Express opened a solution. Noticed that compilation icon (left to the line number) animates even i just opened a project. As soon as i close current solution - the issue disappears.

I had the same issue after installing the latest compulsory patch from 8.1.  (Latest on my machine is labelled KB890830)

The offending program turned out to be QNAP NetBak Replicator.  When I killed this from the Task Manager, 8.1 went back to working correctly.

Although this program clearly is not from Microsoft, it's disappointing that this worked before the update, and after it laid low the entire UI.
